In Memoriam: Prof. Dr. Peter Hünermann

The International Network of Societies for Catholic Theology (INSeCT) mourns the passing of Prof. Dr. Peter Hünermann, whose life and work have left an enduring mark on Catholic theology and on INSeCT itself. INSeCT came into being through Dr. Hünermann’s vision to bring Catholic theologians from around the world into deeper communication, dialogue, and collaboration. He served the Network as its President for two terms, from 1996 to 2002.

INSeCT extends its deepest condolences and offers prayers for the repose of the soul of Prof. Dr. Peter Hünermann. We also hold in prayer his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones, asking God to grant them comfort, strength, and peace during this time of mourning.

The Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Cathedral of Rottenburg am Neckar. The rite of final commendation with the coffin will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Ursula, Rottenburg-Oberndorf, followed by burial at the nearby cemetery.
